Joshua Cheptegei was born on 12 September 1996 in Kapsewui, Kapchorwa District, Uganda
where he was raised until later on when he transferred to Uganda’s capital Kampala for
studies and later employment.
Joshua attended a local primary school in Kapchorwa district where at he tried his luck in
football before trying out both long jump and triple jump. It was through his sports ventures
that he learnt of his talent in long distance running.
After relocating to Kampala with an aim of studying languages and literature for two years, he

States in which he emerged 4th in the 5000 meters men’s race, the same year, he came first in
the 10,000 m men’s race at the African Championships held in Marrakech, Morocco.
The following year in 2015, during the African Junior Championships held in Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia, he came 1st in the 10,000 meters and the same year, while representing the country
in Beijing, China, Cheptegei was the 9th in the 10,000 meters.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 2016 Olympics saw Cheptegei come 8th and 6th in the 5000 meters and
10,000 meters races respectfully. The next year, 2017, in Kampala, Uganda, during the World
Cross Country Championships in the senior race, Cheptegei was the 30th.
London, United Kingdom World Championships graced Cheptegei with an opportunity to win
Silver after he came second in the 10,000 meters race while during the 2018 Commonwealth
games held in Gold Coast, Australia in 2018, Joshua was the first in the 5000 meters.
As of 2019, during the World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus, Denmark, Joshua Cheptegei was the fastest runner in the 10 km race just as he came first in the Doha, Qatar world
championships in the men’s 10,000 meters race.
He then won another gold medal in the Men’s 5000m final, 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
