KENYA – Sauti Sol is a Kenyan afro-pop music band based in Nairobi. It started out as an acapella group consisting of Bien-Aimé Baraza, Willis Chimano and Savara Mudigi back in 2005. However, once guitarist Polycarp Otieno joined the group, they adopted a new stage name, Sauti Sol.
In 2008, the group had her first studio album out and it was named ‘Mwanzo’ which can simply
translate as beginning. Although the first album didn’t get a lot of attention, the second album
surely did capture people’s attention.
The ‘Sol filosofia’ album was released on the 25th of February 2011. It quickly captured people’s
attention and also won the music group a lot of accolades and awards which increased their
prominence in the music industry.
On 18th June 2012, the group also had the self titled extended play with renown South African
producer Spoek Mathambo pushing their exposure far beyond the East African region into
The quartet’s third album came on the 21st of November, 2015 when the group had much
gained attention not just in East Africa but the entire world. The ‘Live and Die in Afrika’ album
paved way for many other albums that have since followed.
Thanks to the attention the group has drawn from all over East Africa, it surely has become the
